It's winter in New Zealand...and you know what that means! Oh...you don't? It means now is the time for NaNoDownUnder on Dreamwidth, being run by [personal profile] china_shop who has this to say about it:

"Just a reminder that NaNoDownUnder starts on June first (for winter New Zealand time). Want to kick-start your writing? Set your own goals -- this doesn't have to be a full 50K-word endeavour, just whatever you want to aim for. Pick a WIP to finish, or set a daily time or wordcount goal. Or just wing it, if you prefer. Daily check-in posts. Locked comm so we can chat/cheer/commiserate in semi-privacy (ie, you have to join to play, but membership isn't moderated)."

Older Not Dead - Love For The Over 40's is accepting prompts through July 28th for Promptathon 18. Older_Not_Dead Promptathon

Go suggest some prompts! In August fill some prompts!

The following dS prompts have been suggested so far, for the theme history:

RayK/Stella. Do you remember that time in high school history class?

RayV/Angie. Years after the divorce, their shared history brings them back together.

Fraser/Victoria. Will history repeat itself?

Fraser/RayK. Line taken directly from canon: "Take a look back through history and what do you see?"

I've had a WIP going for ages that was inspired by the dS_shakespeare comm. Nothing's been posted there in several years...and my WIP probably won't be finished any time soon either. So for any of y'all who might feel inspired by the Bard : http://ds-shakespeare.livejournal.com/

There's prompts for due South et al at http://older-not-dead.livejournal.com. This is for fanworks featuring pairings who are older than 40 (they don't have to be older than 40 in canon, but they have to be older than 40 in the fanworks); deadline is the last day of May.

The Archive of Our Own has just passed the 1 million fanworks mark!
On November 14, 2009, the AO3 entered open beta. Two days into the launch, AO3 News shared the following statistics:

"Total invitations issued: 1410
Number of accounts before Open Beta: 347
Number of accounts at present: 1076
Number of works before Open Beta: 6598
Number of works at present: 9506
Number of fandoms represented before Open Beta: 674
Number of fandoms represented at present: 886"

And now, just four years and two months later, AO3 has over 1 million works representing 14,353 fandoms! The site has over 270,000 registered users (with at least 1 million unregistered users visiting each day) and is still growing. AO3 currently issues 750 invitations a day, so if you’re not already registered, now is a great time to join the Archive.

What does this mean?

AO3’s rapid growth shows the ever-increasing number of fans creating and sharing fanworks online. This site is still relatively young, joining a long line of fanwork archives, from those created to host a single fan’s work to the many dedicated to individual fandoms, characters and relationships; particular topics or genres; specific languages or countries; formats and connected fandoms. The sheer number of visitors to AO3 also represents the importance of fanworks to the everyday life of millions of people internationally. Whether fans are creating, commenting, sharing or viewing, they engage in fannish activities every single day. Finally, the Archive is one of a very small number of open-source projects founded and largely staffed by women, another contribution fans have made to the internet as a whole. Many women who were not previously involved in technology have learned new skills in the name of fannish activities, and the AO3 is proud to stand as a shining example of this growth.

I posted every day but one during this year's WriSoMiFu (missed the night before Thanksgiving -- exhausted pre-holiday me was exhausted). Sadly this comm has now closed permanently, but happily there is a new comm, You Should Be Writing -- http://ushobwri.livejournal.com/ -- which has arisen out of it. Check-ins every Wednesday all year round for what we formerly got just in the month of November.

To quote Captain Jack Harkness : "Now we carry on. You can. We all can. The end is where we start from."

The month-of-November multifandom promptathon, with the theme hurt/comfort, is now open at Older_Not_Dead on LJ. The idea is to make fanworks with a slash pairing of 40-or-older characters; it doesn't matter whether or not they are 40 or older in canon, but they must be 40 or older for fanworks in this challenge. There are six due South prompts for the month of November.

I'm encouraging the dS and C6D fen to check out fannish_advent. The easy rules for the community: the  fannish_advent comm seeks to post at least one fannish thing per day, every day in December.  Any fannish thing: fic (of any length), art, vids, music, fanmixes, rec lists, arts & crafts, et cetera. WIP's are allowed. Seasonal themes are not especially required, nor are they forbidden. No pressure, no stress, just a bit of fannish fun.

If you have the time this December to post even just one fannish thing, please join the community and sign up for your day.
Signup post here! Signups will be available until November 30th!
