Fannish 50 Challenge 2024: Post # 32: Canadian Musician Fandom (BNL)

It was with amazement and delight that I learned my beloved Canadian band -- The Barenaked Ladies -- was going to be performing 5 miles (or 8 km if you're Canadian) from my home in the Midwestern U.S. I had never seen them perform live, always wanted to...and haven't even gone to ANY concerts since the pandemic. (The last two live concerts I did attend before the pandemic were also Canadian, which I'm sure surprises no one.) I got online at the ticket-ordering website about an hour before it opened, wanting to be right at the front of that virtual ticket line. I got a ticket for myself and a ticket for my fanpair...and the concert completely sold out within the first hour of ticket sales.

I saw them perform live here in Fairbanks, Alaska about 10 or 15 years ago! It was a terrific show, so much energy and enthusiasm from both the band and the crowd.

Yeah, "so much energy and enthusiasm from both the band and the crowd" describes this time too! Seemed like just about everyone there -- myself included -- knew the lyrics to all the songs and was singing along and dancing.

We saw them at the Orkney folk festival some years back (there are huge connections between Orkney and Canada so Canadian bands often pop up) and they were great fun!

At a folk festival in Orkney! And what is the nature of this connection you mention between Canada and Orkney?

The HBC- many Orkney people went over there to work.

They've been touring like crazy lately! I'm a little amazed they sold out so fast. Still as popular as ever!

I saw them in Glasgow when I lived in Scotland, about 15 years ago, and it was a very fun show. The audience was probably 60% Canadian expats lol.

Heh, is that 60% number a reflection of there being a lot of Canadian expats in Scotland or just a reflection of the concert audience being made up of so many of them?

Haha, more a function of the concert. It was like we all congregated at the concert, lol.

I've only lived in two! I went to university in Scotland. And I spent about six months in Tanzania doing volun-tourism, but IDK if that counts as "living there."

Oh, I would deffo count six months as living there.

So awesome you got to see them! I haven't seen much live music in the past 20 years, living in a small relatively rural area very very far away from any major city, but it's always lovely when someone stops through.

I'm suburban, not rural, but still I'm someplace where famous bands don't make local appearances...except this time BNL did! And it was indeed awesome!
