And originally he was just cast for the pilot, but when the show got the go-ahead they were like "we killed off Gordon's character -- but what can we do now to keep him in the show...."

Yep, that is exactly what I mean! Paul Gross has remarked in interviews that he himself was like "We had Gordon Pinsent! Gordon Pinsent! How could we not do something to keep him?"

I've been watching a lot of Red Green Show lately, and he's hilarious in that too. Wonderful actor, he'll be very missed.

I have wanted for quite a while to write a Red Green Show fic that includes Hap Shaughnessy...just haven't acquired any plotbunnies for that yet.

I've been mulling over a fic for a while, and there's just so much about the show's charm and humor that's entirely visual, that it's really hard to figure out how. (Plus with 300 episodes, they've pretty much done it all!!!)
