For obvious reasons, I blame the fact that I got this on being in due South fandom for many, many, many years.

Yep, that is one of the primary obvious reasons.

It wasn't even due South itself! It was specifically the fandom. I heard the song for the first time in "Mountie on the Bounty," but I didn't get into fandom proper until a year later (as I didn't have reliable internet back then in the boondocks). So I was so very confused when everyone kept referencing it, because to me it had been a random song that I'd heard once a year or so earlier that I'd never heard of before but everyone in the dS fandom kept referencing.

Fandom overall -- not just due South fandom -- has had a big effect on my "relationship" with songs...like songs I only ever heard at fancon dance parties and now I have a "fandom is my fandom" feeling about them.

Yeah, I'm very similar thanks to Vividcon. There are so many songs that immediately remind me of a specific fandom (or even people who were in that specific fandom) even though I may have never actually been involved in the fandom myself.

I don't know if you remember this, but Vividcon is where I first met you.

And I still haven't stopped feeling sad about the end of Vividcon, No other all-vids cons except the one in Cardiff and that's too far for me to travel.

Yep, that's why I mentioned it by name. 😉

For me, Vividcon was really my only "fandom is my fandom" convention, as most of the other small fannish cons I've been to have had more of a fanfiction focus. And, for me, "fandom is my fandom" is very specific to vids. Fanfiction is something where I have to be familiar with the fandom to really enjoy it, which is very much not the case with fanvids, and I think that plays a big role in it.

Yes, same here as far as I can get into vids without knowing the fandom but for fic I can't really get into it if it's not already one of my fandoms.

Oh, it's been so many years since I've been in Montréal that it was actually before I was in fandom, so there being a Rue Sherbrooke didn't catch my attention at the time.

A specific reference to a scene from due South - Mountie on the Bounty and a general reference to the fandom around songs by Stan Rogers beloved of Canadians and worldwide-Canadaphiles.

The humor in the cartoon is that because the song is a call-and-response song the person in hiding hearing the call-lyric will feel compelled to answer with the response-lyric.
