Okay, I found someone on Reddit who went through all the script books and typed up a summary of ALL the different Babylon 5 plans/plot/changes, and ... I can't believe I'm saying this, but if this is accurate, it sounds like the almost-cancellation/having to compress most of the plot into season 4 actually may have been an improvement over the original.

(It also sounds like JMS was constantly changing major details / long-term plans on the fly throughout all the seasons, which makes the cohesion of the final version even more impressive, even without taking into account all of the network meddling and cast changes! One reason why I've been going down a rabbit hole on this is because I really do think this is one of the most impressive creative feats I've ever seen pulled off, I want to understand it from a creative perspective myself, and the more I find out about it, the more impressed I am.)

1. Since my last post, I've been offline a lot, but did hear about a Worldcon volunteer's use of ChatGPT to vet panelists: muccamukk's roundup, Jason Sanford. I also watched a bunch of Youtube videos, including a target data story by Angela Collier.

2. TV: I watched season 1 of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and thought about subscribing to Apple TV to get Murderbot.

3. Books: I reread some Narnia books (still good, but The Silver Chair has weirder politics than I noticed as a child) and read some new sff that was ok, but not exceptional (The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis, Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan). I looked for Marius/Cobra fic on AO3 and found 9 whole fics. Meanwhile, Life on a Young Planet provided many fun facts about how Earth was terraformed.

Sidelight: This spring, I posted one recommendation in recthething (for "the gears of time turn on" by LadyHoneydee (TLOZ:BOTW)). I used to have a recommendation-of-the-month project for FK fanfiction, long, long ago. I've been thinking of getting back into recommendations, via such communities, perhaps with mirroring in my AO3 account, definitely no longer limited by fandom. I'm wondering whether and how people really use recs these days. Would it be a good use of my time for others?

I'll start off being honest: I did not relate to Bix. She's a great character and a complicated woman, but she wasn't my favourite.

That said, there is such awesome writing on this show because this was a different character yet again. An ordinary person who never signed up for the Rebellion, but got dragged into it because of who she knew. Tortured because of an ex. And then wanted to fight back.

Reccer's Notes: I am fascinated by stories of how people come to Starfleet and what it must be like to meet people from such disparate backgrounds. This story approaches this subject with grace as Gaila and Christine Chapel become roommates at Starfleet Academy and must figure out each other's very different values and expectations. By opening up to each other, they forge a friendship. I like how creative the author is in describing Gaila's background and culture. The cultural exchange never feels heavy-handed. It's conveyed with tiny, realistic details like borrowing things from someone else's desk.

In addition to the cultural exchange element, the story weaves in ideas of resilience and having the power to change your life.

Chapter 7: Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei argue about their relationship; Zhu Hong defends Zhao Yunlan by blaming Shen Wei, and Zhao Yunlan again tries to let her down gently. He sends Zhu Hong and Daqing back to Dragon City, then heads towards the Great Seal, with the timely help of the extremely convenient water dragon pearl from Zhu Hong's uncle.
Chapter 8: Chu Shuzhi returns to Dragon City after a break, carries Guo Changcheng's bag, and learns what he does in his free time. The entire SID is shocked about Shen Wei being the Emissary. Meanwhile Zhao Yunlan reaches the Ancient Merit Tree, and sees memories from being Kunlun.

The corresponding part in the Chinese version on JJWXC/the fan translation are chapters 85-86.
