I wouldn't ordinarily use my DW to promote a commercial business, but I'm making an exception...and I do have a "self-created" fannish connection to Pandora.

For about half-a-dozen years I've been assembling a due South charm bracelet made up entirely of Pandora charms. Until midnight Eastern United States Time tonight Pandora will be donating 50% of all their online sales to Red Cross funds for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. I'm going to buy more charms now for my due South bracelet. If you ever wanted to buy any Pandora brand jewelry, now's the time to do it for yourself where it will also benefit those in immediate need of help after the hurricane.

This link will take you to the Pandora site.

Please see this first-person account from Texan [personal profile] sage about Hurricane Harvey, which contains many links to ways you can help those affected by the hurricane.

Here's what's happening and ways to help.

Charities to which I myself donated tonight to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey: Food Bank of Corpus Christi, Gulf Coast Humane Society, Galveston County Food Bank, Houston Food Bank, Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies, Coalition for the Homeless of Houston.

Fanworks is a new con that will begin in 2019. It will be dedicated to various forms of fannish craft, including but not limited to fanfic, fanvids, fanart, and podfic, and is under development by [personal profile] trelkez, [personal profile] sweetestdrain, and [personal profile] absolutedestiny.

There will be individual programming tracks for fanfic, podfic, fanvids, and fanart. Panel programming will focus on craft, and will be a mix of technical panels and presentations (how to achieve a video effect, how to write a certain kind of scene, how to make certain kinds of cosplay outfits, et cetera) and topical discussion panels related to different fan crafts. The fanvid programming track will have both panels and vidshows, including a show of premiering vids. All vidshows will be available to stream online (with viewer-optional subtitles) for attending and supporting members.

Planned features of the con include:

-- the FanWorks Night Market: an evening event with vendor tables, food, and drinks
-- a vid dance party
-- a con zine
-- an on-site art gallery
-- a quiet room with a zine library and podfic available for checkout

I'm a member of both Sierra Club U.S. and Sierra Club Canada, and I want to share this image that Sierra Club Canada posted today along with their news of offering discounted memberships to join the resistance against Trump's assault on environmentalism.

Bast has contributed so much to fandom: as a writer of fic and as a publisher of zines (DBA Requiem and DBA Ravenshadow). Now I'm boosting this signal to ask fandom to help Bast. She has had a lot of health issues for some time, and now her mother has cancer. They live in a rural area and they depend on their car to transport them to get health care, and now they need to raise money to fix the brakes on that only car. There's an upcoming cancer surgery for her mom, so they really need to get that car fixed NOW. If you can help at all, please go to this link to contribute: click here to help Bast and her mom.

Tens of thousands of evacuees from the fire-ravaged regions of Alberta need help. When offering help, be aware that there are scams posing as donation sites, and also even if you’re giving through organizations that are actually trying to help, be aware that some not-requested items may actually be counter-productive. To make sure your donations have the maximum effect, follow these guidelines:

1.If you want to donate to the Red Cross, you can give any amount through this link: Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal. Alternately, you can donate $5 by texting REDCROSS to 30333 or donate $10 by texting FIRES to 45678. Be careful: There are some scammers posing as the Red Cross asking for money on social media. (Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government is matching all donations made to the Red Cross for the Fort McMurray Wildfires).
2.If you want to donate to the Salvation Army, you can give any amount through this link: Salvation Army Alberta Fire Response.

1.If you need can take in some evacuees, check out these Facebook groups: Fort McMurray Evacuee Open Source Help Page, Fort Mcmurray evac relocation help group.
2.Airbnb has waived all service fees through May 21 for those affected by the fire, and there are already over 40 places listed on the site for free.
3.Those able to house displaced people can also sign up at ymmfire.ca.

1.The Calgary Humane Society put out an urgent request for hard plastic kennels to house displaced animals. Kennels can be dropped off at: 4455 110 Avenue SE
2.Those looking to house people’s companion animals, help unify lost companion animals with owners, and generally assist with animal rescue should check out this Facebook page: Fort McMurray Fire Emergency Animal Assistance
1.If you want to donate items such as blankets or clothes, check out this Facebook group: Fort Mac Fire Donations. Make sure you’re only giving things that are requested. People often donate things after a disaster that aren’t needed, and sometimes actually get in the way of vital supplies.
2.Edmonton Emergency Relief Services is collecting diapers, baby wipes, new socks, underwear, and toiletries. Drop off items at 10255 104th St in Edmonton.
3.Edmonton’s Food Bank is collecting donations. Food can be dropped off at any major grocery store or fire hall in Edmonton. For monetary donations: Edmonton’s Food Bank Fort McMurray Fire Evacuee Support.

1.Edmonton Emergency Relief Services is looking for volunteers. Call 780-428-4422 and leave a message, they will get back to you.
2.Those interested in volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross can sign up here.

There are many ways to help; I will be making a detailed post of links telling where and how.

I have made a $100 donation to the Canadian Red Cross. Note: Justin Trudeau has announced that whatever amount you can donate to the Canadian Red Cross, the Government of Canada will make a matching donation.

I just saw a tweet from Paul Gross "Help the people of Fort McMurray - text REDCROSS to 30333". That's how I learned about the devastating fires in and around Fort McMurray, Alberta. The details are more than I can bear to post -- they can be found all over the news on the Net. If you are able to offer cash help, either text as above or go to the Canadian Red Cross: Help for Alberta Fires Emergency website.

Please boost this signal!

The Spouses of the RCMP have created an event to show their support for the fallen Moncton RCMP officers. We can't all be in Moncton for the memorial service but we can show our support. Let's wear red on Tuesday to show that the fallen, wounded, their families, and all members of the RCMP are in our hearts. Please share this event and invite all your friends. It would be good if the tide of red RCMP serges wasn't alone on Tuesday. Stand with them!
